Huge storms in Melbourne

environment | Posted on February 3rd, 2005 Add comments

Last night, Melbourne received 104mm of rain, making it the wettest Melbourne day in recorded history

There has been local flooding in places, trees have fallen, and the electricity supply cut to many people. In fact, so many trees have fallen, and there has been so much localised flooding, that Melburnians were advised not to go to work this morning, to try and combat the traffic problems. And because of the same reasons, tram and train services were also slow or cancelled. The Yarra River in the city, as well as several other waterways across Melbourne have burst their banks.

I was unable to go to work this morning, and was amazed to witness the extent of traffic congestion. I decided to venture to one of the local parks, where I found it flooded at 9am this morning.

Here are two pictures, the first is of a picnic table (and rubbish bin in foreground) with a tree fallen on it. The bench seats are almost completely submerged. The second image is of myself standing on a ‘boardwalk’. This is normally surrounded my small vegetation and grass, but this morning was like a great lake!

There is an ABC News story about the storms located here.
