It's looking rather sad as the days go by.
Demolition people are already putting the frame around it.

The building may not be the best example of Art Deco or streamline Moderne, but as its replacement is just a glass box, I feel that there is no reason why, the façade of the building at least could not be saved.

Surely if creating jobs is the issue here then more jobs would be needed to save the façade while building behind it. I do not agree in any circumstances that a building should be replaced with something less significant, especially as like you have stated that it is part of a larger picture, a heritage streetscape.

Thanks for the interesting article, Adam. As a bus traveller, I will miss this building enormously. I've always enjoyed looking at it while waiting. Something about the sum is greater than its parts? The Myer building will be less impressive without its companion next door.

Great post - but hope and blogging are not enough Adam. People need to take action on this. You're right though, streetscapes are important. We've already lost enough and if every B heritage listed building and streetscape was demolished in Melbourne and we only had A heritage listed buildings left, our city would be a sterile collection of shopping malls and office towers lacking any interest or character. BTW, the tower and its role in the overall composition of the building is significant. None of the streamline moderne buildings you mentioned are as good exterior examples of early 20th century Futurist architecture from pre World War II. The subject of futurism was not unfortunately not raised by Heritage Victoria. Aside from the interior of Burley Griffin's capitol theatre, this is one of the few remaining examples. I'd challenge anyone to provide a few more to prove me wrong ....
