Jazz Apples

My favourite apple variety ‘Jazz’ is back in season again.

I admit that I am very partial to apples. One of the nicest apples to arise from recent plant breeding efforts is ‘Jazz’ (Malus domestica ‘Scifresh’P). Originally bred in 1985 as a cross between ‘Royal Gala’ and ‘Braeburn’, the ‘Jazz’ apple has a crisp texture with sweet and plentiful juice. Commercial production commenced in Australia in 2004 and has slowly increased since.

Every year, I look out for the arrival of ‘Jazz’ apples. I consider ‘Jazz’ to be the sweetest of the apple varieties and to have a better flavour that my old favourite ‘Pink Lady’.

For a while ‘Jazz’ was rather hard to come by, but supply has considerably improved in the past couple of years and they are now available for fairly extended periods, although not as long as better-established cultivars.

For those who love apples as much as I do, I highly recommend ‘Jazz’. Look out for it when next at the greengrocer’s or the supermarket. A ‘Jazz’ apple juice is also sometimes available which, whilst being deliciously expensive, is rather expensive.

What a refreshing blog. I also enjoy a Jazz apple, but my alltime favourite is the good old fashioned Granny Smith, which has a slight ‘tartness’ as well as being juicy.

I remember well, many years ago when I was young, going to Bacchus Marsh and we would purchase a box of freshly picked apples, which were eaten with pleasure over a couple of weeks.

I also, at this time of year enjoy a fresh Bartlett Pear, sweet and full of juice.

A happy read!!
